Ilkay Gundogan has not yet decided on his future.
Transfer market pundit Fabrizio Romano shared a comment on the midfielder’s departure on his social media accounts on Wednesday (Nov. 11). “I have not yet made a final decision on my future,” he said.
Gundogan joined Manchester City from Dortmund in the summer of 2016 and was Pep Guardiola’s first signing after taking over at City. He struggled a bit early on with injuries and acclimatization issues, but soon established himself as a key midfielder in Guardiola’s system.
From the 2017-18 season onward, he played consistently. He played around 30 games in the English Premier League (EPL) each season. City won the league title in four of the last five seasons, from 2017-18 to last season, thanks to Guendouane’s performance. 먹튀검증
This season was no different. Gundogan started 31 EPL games and helped City pull off a thrilling league upset over Arsenal at the end of the season. It didn’t end there. Starting in the FA Cup final against Manchester United, Guindoan was a key contributor to the win with a multi-goal performance.
More recently, he added a new page to the club’s history. On Nov. 11, City secured a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League (UCL). In addition to winning the club’s first-ever UCL title, City also became the second team in English history to complete the treble, joining Manchester United in 1998-99.
Guendouan started the game in the captain’s armband and played the entirety of the match to secure the win. “Gundogan became the first German player to reach a UCL final as captain of a club abroad,” according to soccer statistics outlet Opta.
Gündoğan is now 32 years old. With his contract coming to an end this summer, his next move will be a crucial decision at the end of his career. First of all, City want to keep him at the club.
Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano said on May 5: “City’s offer to extend Guendouane’s contract is still valid. It is until the summer of 2024, with an option for a one-year extension. The offer was made two weeks ago. We are waiting for Guindoan’s final decision.”
In the meantime, Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo broke the news of Gundogan’s move to Barcelona. According to the publication, Barcelona will announce the signing after the UCL final. Guindoan will reportedly join Barcelona next week and will sign a three-year contract. However, Gundogan is undecided about his future at the moment.
