South Korea’s round of 16 opponent at the U-20 World Cup is Ecuador. The team finished second in Group B and is the highest-scoring team in the tournament, having scored the most goals in three group games.
Kim Eun-joong’s men’s national team drew 0-0 with the Gambia in their third match of Group F at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 at the Mendoza Stadium in Argentina at 6 a.m. ET on Monday.
With the draw, South Korea advances to the Round of 16 in second place in Group F, behind the Gambia, which topped the group with two wins and two draws. Their round of 16 opponent will be Ecuador. Ecuador finished second in Group B with two wins and one loss, behind the United States, which won three games. If South Korea had beaten the Gambia, they would have faced Uruguay, who finished second in Group E.
Ecuador conceded a late goal in stoppage time to lose 0-1 to the United States in their first game, then came from behind to win 2-1 against Slovakia in their second game, and a whopping 9-0 win against Fiji in their third game. South Korea and Ecuador will face off on June 2 at 6 a.m. in Santiago del Estero. After playing three consecutive group games at the same Mendoza Stadium, South Korea will have to travel nearly 900 kilometers to Santiago del Este.
If they win the round of 16, they will face the winner of the Argentina-Nigeria match in the quarterfinals. Argentina are the hosts, and Nigeria are the two-time runners-up who went 2-1-1 in Group D, a group of death that also included African powerhouses Brazil and Italy, but lost on goal difference to become the third wild card.
The round of 16 is South Korea, with the added burden of traveling distance and a stronger opponent if they advance past the quarterfinals.
