The Tampa Bay Rays designated Yoenis Chirinos for assignment (DFA) on July 18, MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, reported.
Tampa Bay activated ace Shane McClanahan from the disabled list and recalled infielder Yandy Diaz from maternity leave on the same day. To make room for them, the Rays DFA’d right-hander Chirinos and sent infielder Jonathan Aranda to Triple-A.
Chirinos, a 1993-born right-hander from Venezuela, has seen limited action on the mound for Tampa Bay. Signed as an international amateur in 2012, Chirinos made his big league debut in 2018, splitting time between the starting rotation and the bullpen.
After going 5-5 with a 3.51 ERA in 18 games (7 starts) and 89.2 innings pitched in his rookie season, Chirinos went 9-5 with a 3.85 ERA in 26 games (18 starts) and 133.1 innings pitched in his sophomore campaign in 2019.
However, a short-season elbow injury and Tommy John surgery limited his options. After making just five big league appearances in three years from 2020-2022, Chirinos bounced around the minors this season, going 4-4 with a 4.02 ERA in 15 games (4 GS) and 62.2 innings pitched.
In his five seasons in the big leagues, 해외안전놀이터 추천 Chirinos has 64 games (33 GS), 304 innings, 19 wins, 14 losses, and one hold, with a 3.64 ERA. While he hasn’t been able to establish himself in the rotation, he’s done a decent job as a long-inning pitcher in a “closer” role. His performance this season hasn’t been bad by any means, so there’s no shortage of teams that could claim him.
According to MLB.com, general manager Kevin Cash said, “We’re happy to have McClanahan and Diaz back,” but added, “The decision to DFA Chirinos was one of the toughest in recent years. He’s been with the team since he was 18 years old and means a lot to a lot of people. It was a very difficult decision.”
